Tag question
adalah pertanyaan yang ditempatkan
di akhir sebuah pernyataan. Bentuknya terdiri dari kata kerja bantu dan kata
ganti, seperti: isn't he? didn't
they? dsb. Gunanya untuk meminta
penegasan / persetujuan kepada
orang yang diajak
bicara tentang benar
atau tidaknya pernyataan yang disampaikan oleh si penutur.
Contoh :
Rudi datang ke sini setiap
hari, bukan?
Rudi comes here every day, doesn’t
he?
Cara menentukan
kata kerja bantunya :
1. Bila dalam kalimatnya ada to be, tagnya harus terdiri dari to be lagi
2. Bila dalam kalimatnya ada modals, seperti : can,
may, must, shall,
will,
have, has, had, dsb maka tagnya harus terdiri dari modals lagi
3. Bila dalam kalimatnya tidak
ada to be ataupun modals, maka
tagnya harus dibantu dengan do, does, atau did.
Cara membentuk tag question adalah :
1. Jika pernyataannya positip,
tagnya harus dalam bentuk negatip.
Contoh :
It was very cold yesterday, wasn’t it?
There
is something wrong with your car, isn’t there?
That
is your book, isn’t it?
Your
name is Hasan, isn’t it?
He likes swimming very much, doesn’t
he?
I
am older than you are, aren’t I?
2. Jika pernyataannya negatip, tagnya harus dalam bentuk
positip.
Contoh :
That girl isn't your sister, is she?
She
did not come here yesterday, did she?
You
father cannot speak English well, can he?
He doesn not come here every Sunday, does he?
I
am not as old as you are, am I?
KEKECUALIAN
1. Jika kalimat pernyataannya menggunakan kata-kata : little, few, hardly,
barely, rarely, scarcely, seldom,
neither, no, none, maka tagnya yang
harus dalam bentuk positip.
Contoh :
Few students knew the answers, did they?
He
seldom comes on time, does he?
2. Jika subjectnya terdiri
dari Indefinite
pronouns, seperti : everybody,
everyone, somebody, someone, anybody, anyone, nobody,
no one,
maka pronouns tersebut harus diubah
menjadi "they" pada
tagnya.
Contoh :
Everybody brought her a present, didn’t they?
Nobody can solve the problem, can they?
Tetapi "nothing"
dan "everything" berubah
menjadi "it"
Contoh:
Nothing
important was discussed in the
meeting, was it?
Everything
is going to be alright, isn’t it?
3. Tag untuk kalimat perintah adalah : will you? would you?
atau can't you?
Contoh :
Bring
me the book, will you?
Open
the door, would you?
"Can't you?" digunakan apabila yang
berbicara sedang marah atau tidak
sabar.
Contoh :
Bring
me the book, can’t you?
Close
the door, can’t you?
4. Jika kalimatnya bersifat mengajak, mengundang,
atau menawarkan,
tagnya adalah : won't you?

adalah : will you?

him go now, will you?
